Continuous Glucose Monitoring Cost 2021

Key Companies & Market Share Insights

Dexcom Official Big Game Commercial 2021 with Nick Jonas

The market has the strong presence of a large number of global and regional companies. Most of the leading companies are involved in strategic collaborations, product developments, mergers, and acquisitions, and regional expansions to gain a higher revenue share in the industry.

For instance, in November 2020, Medtronic announced FDA approval for its smart insulin pen called InPen, indicated for diabetic patients on multiple daily injections. The device comes with a Guardian CGM system, which enables real-time access to patients glucose and insulin data. Some of the key players in the global continuous glucose monitoring devices market are:

Abbott Freestyle Libre 2

The Abbott FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring system is growing in popularity, especially now that the latest Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2 model offers optional real-time alerts that can notify users about high and low glucose levels.

As of mid-2021, the Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2 still requires a separate hand-held reader to scan the circular sensor you wear on your upper arm for up to 14 days.

Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2 launched in late 2017 and is available through national pharmacies like Costco, CVS, Kroger, Walgreens, and Rite Aid. Abbott tells DiabetesMine that most Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2 users in the United States are getting their sensors through retail pharmacies.

Notably, Abbott says the FreeStyle Libre 2 costs 70 percent less than the list price of other CGM systems currently available in part because it doesnt require a separate transmitter with each sensor like the competing products do.

Here are the approximate prices for the Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2 system in pharmacies:

  • sensors: list price of $54 per 14-day sensor, according to Abbott generally $58 to $69 at retail pharmacies like Costco and Walgreens
  • with commercial insurance, most people pay between $10 and $75 per month for the Abbott Libre 14-day sensors at participating pharmacies
  • hand-held reader: $70

What Is Freestyle Libre

FreeStyle Libre is a continuous glucose monitoring system thats applied to the arm. With a tiny filament thats inserted into the skin, the quarter-sized sensor can monitor blood glucose levels for up to 14 days, using a handheld monitor or compatible mobile phone and app, and store up to eight hours of glucose data. A check blood glucose symbol will appear at times when the sensor reading may not be accurate. If you see this symbol, you must check your levels with a blood glucose meter.

The latest model is the FreeStyle Libre 3, which is much smaller than its predecessor its about the size of a penny. It also comes with an optional, customizable alert setting to let you know if your glucose levels get too high or low. The urgent low glucose alarm threshold value is fixed at 55 mg/dL and cannot be changed, but it can be toggled on or off according to your preferences. Still, keeping it on is a good idea as real-time glucose alarms can alert you when medical attention is warranted.

Why You Still Need Some Finger Prick Checks

You may need to do a finger prick check, for example, if what youre feeling doesnt match what your blood sugar reading says. Or if youre treating a hypo, you may want to do one to get the most accurate result.

With some CGMs, you may also need the result of a finger prick check every day to reset your device.

Buying A Cgm Or Flash Glucose Monitor

If you dont qualify for a flash glucose monitor or CGM, your main option is to self-fund a device. Its expensive so if its something youre thinking of doing, its worth speaking to your healthcare team first to see if they think its something that would suit you.

There is only one flash glucose monitor manufactured at the moment. This is called the Freestyle Libre (the Freestyle Libre2, The newest model has alarms for predicted high or low blood sugar levels. But when the alarm does sound you still have you scan your arm to check your blood sugar level.

Both a CGM And a flash glucose monitor are offered on the NHS to people who qualify and are also available to buy.

Why Medicare Will Cover The Medtronic Cgm Now

Up until now, Medtronic has been the only CGM company without Medicare coverage.

The other CGM products available Dexcom G5 and G6, Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2, and the implantable Eversense CGM from Senseonics and Ascensia have been covered for years. But Medtronic is the only company that did not get a non-adjunctive designation , which wouldve allowed the CGM to be used for insulin dosing and treatment decisions without a need for confirmatory fingersticks.

That so-called dosing claim was a new category created by the Food and Drug Administration , its first attempt to distinguish the different levels of CGM technology that existed at that time in 2017. The Dexcom G5 was the first to obtain that status and be known as a therapeutic CGM, followed by the Abbott FreeStyle Libre and then Eversense 90-day implantable CGM.

To date, Medtronics Guardian CGM remains the only one that requires fingerstick calibrations and doesnt have Medicare coverage.

But CMS is now changing that, lumping Medtronics device into the same category as the non-adjunctive devices so that they are all covered by Medicare.

Importantly, the new Medicare policy does not include Medtronics stand-alone Guardian Connect CGM system. Instead, it only allows for Medicare coverage of the Medtronic CGM when it is combined with the companys MiniMed insulin pumps.

Best Glucose Meter For Built

This self monitoring blood glucose meter requires no coding, making it one of the easiest blood sugar monitors for beginners. Like the other devices featured in our best glucometers roundup, it produces fast results with minimal fuss.

The Trividia Health True Metrix Blood Glucose Meter stores approximately 500 readings, and these can be downloaded onto your computer for storage.

This meter has over 190 reviews on Amazon, scoring an average of 4.6 out of 5 stars. 89% of those are rated highly, and highlight the meters accuracy and reliability. Value for money is another common motif. Again, like all the other glucometers in this guide, a minority of reviews criticize the accuracy and battery life. From 350 reviews on Walgreens, the meter scores a lower 3.6 out of 5, with 209 being 5-star reviews, and 71 being 1-star reviews. Critical reviews state that the meter is inconsistent, while positive reviews say it has never faltered in its accuracy.

The meter offers 7-, 14-, 30-, 60- and 90-day averages to help you determine if your diabetes management routine or medication are working or need to be adjusted with your doctors guidance.

You can tag blood sugar results by linking them to specific instances such as pre- or post-meal, when taking medicine, or after exercising. The True Metrix Blood Glucose Meter has four programmable alarms to remind you to test your blood sugar levels handy if you often forget to do so and it has a ketone reminder.

Notes For Buying Online

How Continuous Glucose Monitoring Can Help Patients With Diabetes

When browsing for glucose monitors online, youll notice that some versions, such as the Rite Aid TrueMetrix, are available for purchase over the counter, while CGMs, such as the FreeStyle Libre or Dexcom G6, are not.

This is because youll need a doctors prescription to get a CGM system. However, you dont need a prescription for the basic fingerstick meters weve included on our list. With a prescription, you may be able to buy a CGM from a medical supply store online.

If you do decide to purchase a glucose monitor or meter online, be sure you know the total costs up front, including any test strips, extra sensors, lancets, and accessories that may be sold separately. You might also consider setting up these accessories on an auto-ship basis so you dont run out.

When You Cant Afford A Continuous Glucose Monitor

As much excitement as there is about continuous glucose monitoring technology becoming the new standard of care for diabetes, the reality is that its still too expensive for many people to afford.

Despite the proven benefits of CGM, and the fact that its becoming more accessible for some people with type 1 diabetes and good health insurance, it remains a luxury for many.

A 2021 study confirmed that pricing is one of the biggest barriers to widespread use of CGM.

And thats before even looking at the factors of race, socioeconomics, and different types of diabetes, which tend to lower diabetes technology usage dramatically.

Its a helpful tool, but too expensive for most people to maintain even with insurance, says Mike Durbin in Indiana, who gave up his Dexcom G6 CGM in 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic because of cost.

Hes not alone, by a long shot.

While finger stick monitors have long been a mainstay in diabetes management, pricking your finger to obtain a blood sample several times a day can be painful and time consuming. Since its still extremely important for those with diabetes to keep tabs on their blood sugar readings, many are looking for alternatives to make the process easier. In the last few years, there have been several new technologies to help in the development of blood sugar monitors without finger pricks.

Read on to learn more about which types of blood sugar monitors dont involve finger sticks, and how to talk with your doctor about whether these noninvasive options are right for you.

Some Cgm Sensors Cost Less Without Insurance

If you dont have health insurance, this doesnt always mean you cant access a continuous glucose monitor. While health insurance may make it easier for some people with diabetes to access a CGM at an affordable rate, this isnt always the case.

Even if you have a high deductible healthcare plan , you may find that some continuous glucose monitors like the Freestyle Libre 2 cost less out of pocket without running insurance.

A Freestyle Libre 2 sensor can be purchased without insurance at many pharmacy counters across the United States for typically around $130-140 for two sensorsabout a months worth of supplies. So long as you have a prescription for the product, you should be able to fill it and purchase it for around this price point.

Lower Prices Help Propel More Use

People with Type I diabetes who make no insulin need the frequent data from the monitors in order to inject the proper dose of a synthetic version of the hormone, via a pump or syringe. Because insulin injections can cause life-threatening drops in their blood sugar, the devices also provide a warning to patients when this is happening, particularly helpful while sleeping.

People with Type 2 diabetes, a different disease, do make insulin to control the upswings after eating, but their bodies dont respond as vigorously as people without the disease. About 20 percent of Type 2 patients still inject insulin because their bodies dont make enough and oral medications cant control their diabetes.

Is A Continuous Glucose Monitor The Same As An Insulin Pump

No, CGM devices and insulin pumps are not the same.

They do very different things:

  • CGM devices measure your glucose level automatically every few minutes, all day long.
  • Insulin pumps deliver a steady flow of insulin based on instructions you give.

But they are similar in some ways. Both CGM devices and insulin pumps are:

  • Automated: They work all day and night for as long as you wear them.
  • Worn directly on your body: Most people wear CGM devices and pumps on their arm or belly.
  • Customizable: You can adjust CGM and pumps based on your life and how diabetes affects you.
  • Convenient: With CGM, you need fewer fingerstick tests. Insulin pumps mean fewer injections .
  • Not a quick fix: CGM and pumps both help you better manage diabetes. But each device requires you to actively use it and direct your own treatment decisions.
