Freestyle Libre 2 Sensor 2 Pack
The FreeStyle Libre 2 System is a continuous glucose monitoring system which consists of a reader and a disposable sensor worn on the back side of the arm. This discreet sensor, which is about the thickness of two stacked quarters, is easily applied and stays on the body for up to 14 days.
Make sure to check your blood glucose levels by scanning the sensor, it even works through clothing. The FreeStyle Libre 2 System is for adults and children of 4 years and older with diabetes.
Difference Between A Flash Glucose Monitor And A Cgm
With a CGM your latest sugar levels show up on device or mobile automatically, transmitted by Bluetooth. With a flash glucose monitor, its only when you wave your device over your sensor that you get your blood sugar readings.
Some people prefer to use Flash over CGM. Reasons can include not liking the alarms. But unlike Flash, a CGM can talk to an insulin pump, if you want to use a closed loop system.
Your diabetes healthcare team should be able to support you to make the decision on which device will be best for you.

Who May Want To Consider Other Options
This blood glucose monitor may not be right for all users. Given that there are concerns with the accuracy, your doctor may recommend a traditional blood glucose monitor if your condition causes frequent glucose spikes or crashes.
You may also consider having a backup monitor with traditional blood testing in case you experience symptoms of hypoglycemia that the FreeStyle Libre isnt showing.
Note that the FreeStyle Libre isnt approved for people on dialysis or pregnant people.
Where Can You Get The Freestyle Libre

Once you purchase the entire system, you need to purchase only replacement sensors. Each sensor lasts for 14 days.
Youll need a doctors prescription to buy the FreeStyle Libre. With private insurance, the monitor costs between $10 and $75 a month. This would equal about two 14-day sensors.
The monitor is also covered by Medicare, though you may still experience out-of-pocket costs for your diabetes care.
Aside from ease of use, the FreeStyle Libre has a lower cost than other CGMs.
The FreeStyle Libre is sold at pharmacies and medical supply stores. Its not available on e-commerce or at big-box stores without a prescription.

Other technologies are also expected in the future, such as a laser technique known as Raman spectroscopy.
Depending on your diabetes treatment plan and health, your doctor may recommend a traditional blood-calibrating CGM that requires finger sticks.

How Does A Flash Glucose Monitor And Cgm Work
Flash glucose monitors and continuous glucose monitors let you check your blood sugar levels without you having to prick your fingers.
You wear a small sensor on your body day and night that reads your blood sugar levels so you can see the information on your mobile, or other device. If someone helps you look after your diabetes, their mobile can be linked up too.
With a CGM and the latest flash glucose monitor , you can also set an alarm to sound if your blood sugar levels go too low or too high.
This can also be set up to sound on someone elses mobile, for example, a parent or carers.
One of the other main benefits of a flash glucose monitor and CGM is being able to review what your blood sugar levels do every minute of the day and night. With the charts and graphs, you can start to see and understand how food, activity, and other things affect your blood sugar levels.
“It’s a real mental health break knowing what your blood sugar levels are doing at any one time.” Matt

Driving And Checking Your Blood Sugars Using A Cgm Or Flash
You can use a flash glucose monitor or CGM to check your sugar levels when driving, but you must confirm your levels with a finger-prick test if:
- your blood sugar level is 4 mmol/l or below
- you have symptoms of a hypo
- your monitor gives a reading thats not consistent with the symptoms youre getting for example, if you feel like youre having a hypo but the reading doesnt show this.

How To Apply The Freestyle Libre 2 Sensor
- Step 1: Select a Sensor Spot
During normal daily activities, the back of the upper arm stays fairly flat , which makes it an ideal area to place the sensor. Select a site that is at least 2.5 cm away from an insulin injection site. Choose a different site than the one you used last to prevent discomfort or skin irritation.
- Step 2: Prep the Skins Surface
Its important to have a clean, hair-free surface in order for the senor to properly stay in place. Depending on the area and your skin, make sure to wash the area with soap and water. Its recommended to shave the area if it is hairy.
- Step 3: Prep the Sensor
- Peel the lid from the sensor pack and unscrew the cap from the sensor applicator. Next, line up the marks on the sensor applicator and pack. Press firmly down on the sensor applicator until it comes to a stop. Finally, lift the sensor applicator out of the sensor pack. The applicator is ready to apply the sensor now.
