Serum Creatinine As A Risk Factor For The Onset Of Ifg
The multivariate analysis was adjusted for previously reported risk factors for the onset of glucose intolerance and factors associated with chronic kidney disease. Model 1 suggested significantly positive associations between serum creatinine levels and the onset of IFG in both sexes . Model 2, which was adjusted for variables associated with metabolic disease and Model 3 which was adjusted for variables associated with lifestyle, also revealed significant associations between serum creatinine levels and the onset of IFG .
High Creatinine And Mean Plasma Glucose Can Be Caused By Numerous Problems
High levels of Creatinine and Mean plasma glucose in the blood indicate a variety of health problems. If your blood Creatinine level is between 0.9 mg/dL to 1.3 mg/dL and the Mean plasma glucose level is between 0 mg/dL to 116 mg/dL, then your body does not have any underlying health problems. But if Creatinine and Mean plasma glucose levels exceed these levels, you should see a doctor immediately.
What Causes Kidney Disease
One of the main jobs of your kidneys is to filter your blood. They get rid of extra fluid and waste products from your body through your urine.
High blood glucose levels can damage the small blood vessels and tiny filters in your kidneys. High blood pressure can also do this too. This can cause them to leak and not work as well. When this happens, abnormal amounts of protein from the blood can leave your body in your urine. This is often an early sign of kidney disease.

Symptoms Of Kidney Disease
You may not have visible symptoms in the early stages of kidney disease. This is why it’s so important to have the tests for kidney disease every year, as it can be spotted early and slowed down with treatment. If kidney disease progresses, you could notice symptoms like:
- swollen ankles, feet and hands
- blood in your pee
- feeling really tired
- being short of breath
You may be feeling like this because your kidneys are struggling to clear extra fluid and waste from your body. But these symptoms can also be caused by other conditions, so its important to talk to your doctor for more information and advice.
What To Expect From A Creatinine Test

Your doctor measures creatinine with a simple blood test called a creatinine clearance test. If the levels are high, they may follow up with a urine test. Comparing the results of the two tests can confirm whether or not you have kidney damage. What constitutes a high creatinine level? It varies from person to person, depending on age and gender, among other factors. To make things more complicated, creatinine levels can be measured in two different ways, so test results can be confusing. When you get your results, make sure you understand the values and what they mean.
Sometimes, a high creatinine level is the result of factors other than kidney disease, such as dehydration or if you have eaten a lot of meat. The dietary supplement creatine, which may increase muscle mass, can also raise your creatinine levels. However, if you have diabetes, reduced kidney function is oftentimes the cause of high creatinine levels.

How Is Prediabetes Diagnosed
There are three different tests your doctor can use to determine if you have pre-diabetes:
The blood glucose levels measured after these tests determine whether you have pre-diabetes or diabetes.
Is Prediabetes A New Condition
No. It’s a new name for a disorder doctors have known about for a long time. People on their way to developing diabetes have higher than normal blood sugar levels. Pre-diabetes is a clearer way of explaining what it means to have higher than normal blood glucose levels. People with prediabetes are in danger of getting diabetes, and are at higher risk of chronic kidney disease and heart and blood vessel diseases. Giving it a new name helps people understand they have a chance to do something about getting diabetes. They can delay or reduce the risk of getting type 2 diabetes by eating better, exercising and losing excess weight.

Study Population & Outcome Variables
From 2009 to 2015, subjects older than 40years who had received at least one health examination were enrolled. Among them, subjects who had abnormally high levels of serum creatinine or with missing data were excluded. We further excluded subjects with a self-reported history of diabetes or fasting plasma glucose 126mg/dl.
Serum creatinine is known to be influenced by sex, and women tend to have lower levels of serum creatinine . Therefore, we divided serum creatinine into four categories for men and women differently . For men, the categories were< 0.7, 0.70.89, 0.91.19, and1.2mg/dl for women, the categories were< 0.6, 0.60.79, 0.81.09, and1.1mg/dl taking into account the serum creatinine distribution in our study and serum creatinine cut-off points used in previous studies . The reference serum creatinine was below 0.7mg/dl for men and below 0.6mg/dl for women.
The primary outcome was the incidence of T2DM. Using the definition of diabetes based on the American Diabetes Association criteria, T2DM was defined as having fasting plasma glucose 126mg/dl or glycated hemoglobin 6.5% or receiving hypoglycemic agents .
Renal Function In Diabetic Nephropathy
Go to: INTRODUCTION Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The chronic hyperglycemia of diabetes is associated with long-term damage, dysfunction and failure of various organs, especially the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels. Type 2 diabetes mellitus has quickly become a global health problem due to rapidly increasing population growth, aging, urbanization and increasing prevalence of obesity and physical inactivity. There is, therefore, an urgent need to prevent diabetes and its complications. Diabetes is the major cause of end-stage renal disease both in the U.S. and around the world and has enormous medical, social and economic consequences. Diabetes affects the kidney in stages. At the onset of diabetes, the kidney grows large and the glomerular filtration rate becomes disturbed. Most recent basic and clinical research has pointed toward sclerosis and kidney failure. The morbidity and mortality caused by diabetes mellitus can be reduced by regular screening, early detection, and appropriate treatment of chronic complications. Thus, this discussion will focus on development of kidney damage, the various markers available and approaches to development of future markers to enhance the detection of ESRD at the earliest possible stage.Continue reading > >

Total Iron Binding Capacity
Iron is transported in your blood bound to a protein called transferrin. Transferrin transports the iron in your body from the iron storage sites to where it is needed. It also transports the iron when not needed back to the storage sites. A low TIBC suggests malnutrition or iron excess. A high TIBC suggest iron deficiency.
What Are The Symptoms Of High Creatinine Levels
Like proteinuria, a high creatine level is more an indication of a potential health problem, rather than a problem itself. If your creatine level increase is caused by a kidney issues, you may experience related symptoms. Kidney conditions often cause bladder and fluid retention issues. If your kidneys arent working well enough to remove toxins and waste from your body, you could notice a wide range of symptoms, including:
- Changes in urination frequency and appearance
- High blood pressure

What Is The Relationship Between Diabetes And Creatinine Level

Answered by: Prof Dinesh Dhanwal | Prof of Medicine and Head of Endocrinology, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi
Q: What is the relation between diabetes and creatinine? My mother was diagnosed with kidney problem and infection in her urine/blood. A nephrologist cleared out the infection she had but by that time her creatinine level had gone up to 8. The doctor prescribed Endoxin and Wysolone medication. After that her haemoglobin and white cells went beyond the range. In 2 subsequent visits doctor checked her creatinine which was found to be 4.9 & 5. Her sugar was found to be 536 and the doctor said that this was because of Wysolone hence he reduced the dose from 25 to 15 mg. After that her sugar levels came down to 430. Recently the doctor advised her to take insulin with 4,4,4 units daily to maintain her sugar levels & asked her to go on a strict diet. When we measured it after 3 days after stating insulin, her sugar level came down to 230. We consulted our doctor so he increased the insulin dose as 6,4,4. Her creatinine level still varies between 4.5 to 4.9. I need your opinion about the same. Can her creatinine & glucose levels come down to normal in future with the current medication & diet? Will she face any other problem/complications in future and what precautions should we take to avoid further complications? My mother is 56 years old and weighs 66kgs. She has high blood pressure since 10 years and is taking ATANOL-50.

Should I Be Tested For Kidney Disease If I Have Prediabetes
This is a good question for your doctor. Most people with kidney disease do not know they have kidney disease. Many people who have prediabetes or undiagnosed diabetes have signs of kidney damage and/or reduced kidney function . Diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure. Kidney damage occurs even before diabetes is full blown. Tests for kidney disease include: a blood test to estimate your glomerular filtration rate a urine test to find albumin and blood pressure measurement. High blood pressure is a cause and consequence of chronic kidney disease.

What Are The Risk Factors For Prediabetes
Many of the risk factors for prediabetes are similar to those for chronic kidney disease, such as:
- High blood pressure
- History of cardiovascular disease
- Overweight and sedentary lifestyle
- Having a family background that is African American, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, or Pacific Islander
In addition to these shared risk factors, unique risk factors for prediabetes include:
- Having a family history of diabetes
- Giving birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds or being diagnosed with gestational diabetes .
If you have one of these risk factors, talk with your doctor about what testing is recommended for kidney disease and diabetes.

Significance Of The Study
What is already known about this subject?
-
Skeletal muscle mass and the concentration of serum creatinine are associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, but whether serum creatinine is associated with risk of incident dysglycemia remains unclear.
What are the new findings?
-
Low serum creatinine concentrations were positively associated with both incident dysglycemia and incident type 2 diabetes mellitus over a 6.7-year follow-up period, independent of other major risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus including age, body mass index, alcohol intake, physical activity and family history of diabetes.
How might these results change the focus of research or clinical practice?
-
Low serum creatinine concentrations may be indicative of a risk of incident dysglycemia, providing an early opportunity for prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease through lifestyle modifications.

How Does Diabetes Cause Kidney Disease
When our bodies digest the protein we eat, the process creates waste products. In the kidneys, millions of tiny blood vessels with even tinier holes in them act as filters. As blood flows through the blood vessels, small molecules such as waste products squeeze through the holes. These waste products become part of the urine. Useful substances, such as protein and red blood cells, are too big to pass through the holes in the filter and stay in the blood.
Diabetes can damage this system. High levels of blood glucose make the kidneys filter too much blood. All this extra work is hard on the filters. After many years, they start to leak and useful protein is lost in the urine. Having small amounts of protein in the urine is called microalbuminuria.
When kidney disease is diagnosed early, during microalbuminuria, several treatments may keep kidney disease from getting worse. Having larger amounts of protein in the urine is called macroalbuminuria. When kidney disease is caught later during macroalbuminuria, end-stage renal disease usually follows.
In time, the stress of overwork causes the kidneys to lose their filtering ability. Waste products then start to build up in the blood. Finally, the kidneys fail. This failure, ESRD, is very serious. A person with ESRD needs to have a kidney transplant or to have the blood filtered by machine .
