What Are Code Numbers
Code numbers are used to calibrate your meter with the test strips you are using to obtain accurate blood sugar results. If required with your meter, you must code the meter before using it for the first time and then every time you change to another vial of test strips.
Codes are required with the OneTouch UltraMini and the OneTouch Ultra 2. The OneTouch Verio, Verio IQ, and Verio Flex meter do not require coding. See your owners manual to determine if you must code your meter.
Glossary And Important Information
Dehydration: Severe dehydration resulting from excessive water loss may cause false low results. If you believe you are suffering from severe dehydration, consult a healthcare professional immediately.
Low glucose results: If your test result is lower than 70 mg/dL, it may mean hypoglycemia . This may require immediate treatment according to your healthcare professional’s recommendations. Although this result could be due to a test error, it is safer to treat first, and then repeat the test. Temperatures lower than 43 to 50 degrees F may result in inaccurate test results. Retest in a warmer environment.
High glucose results: If your test result is greater than 180 mg/dL, it may mean hyperglycemia . If you do not have symptoms, first repeat the test. Your healthcare professional can work with you to decide what actions, if any, you should take if you continue to get results higher than 180 mg/dL or if you have symptoms.
If your blood glucose is higher than 600 mg/dL, you may have extreme severe hyperglycemia . Retest your blood glucose. If the result is over 600 mg/dL, contact your healthcare provider immediately for instructions.
Repeated unexpected results: If you continue to get unexpected results, check your system with control solution. Review your manual section on control solution testing for specific directions.
Hematocrit: A hematocrit that is either very high or very low can cause false results.

What Is A Normal Glucose Level:
Diabetes Canada recommends an A1C of less than 7%.1 For blood glucose, the recommended target ranges are 4-7 mmol/L before meals and 5-10 mmol/L two hours after a meal. Its a good idea to sit down with your healthcare professional and discuss what target ranges are right for you. Things like your age, medications and time of day can impact your levels.
Track Your Highs And Lows:

Writing down your results will help you learn how things like meals, activity and medication affect your blood glucose. Is your glucose often low before breakfast? Or after you work out? With time, youll be able to recognize results that are out of range and learn how to spot any patterns.
Taking an active role in your diabetes care empowers you to make the right choices to reach your targets and better manage your diabetes.

The Onetouch Ultra 2 Is One Of The Most Commonly Used Glucometers And Its Test Strips Are Available In Almost Every Store That Carries Diabetic Supplies
The OneTouch Ultra 2 is one of the most commonly used glucometers, and its test strips are available in almost every store that carries diabetic supplies. However, its design is outdated, as it’s one of the few glucometers on the market that still requires coding for its test strips and doesn’t feature a high-contrast display or Bluetooth. But its still around because its effective and fast.
One of the most important things to consider when buying a glucometer is its test strips, since they are proprietary and a long-term cost. As such, we visited local pharmacies and online diabetic supply stores to evaluate both the availability and average prices of the test strips used by the glucometers we reviewed. The Ultra 2s test strips are available in almost every store, so you can purchase refills at places like Walgreens and CVS when you run out. Each strip costs an average of about 32 cents, which makes them some of the most affordable on the market. However, this is old technology, so that’s not surprising.
One of the OneTouch Ultra 2s biggest drawbacks is its test strips require coding. This is an old feature that most glucometers have abandoned. Before each test, you enter a code printed on the side of the test strip vial. Its a small step that isn’t difficult to figure out, but if you get the wrong code, it will result in a failed reading. So, you have to be more attentive than with other glucometers.

How Do Test Strips Work
The OneTouch brand of meters measure the glucose content of a blood sample by means of an electrical current produced in the test strip. Glucose in the blood sample mixes with special chemicals in the test strip and a small electric current is produced and measured by the meter. The strength of this current calculates your blood glucose level.
Test results are “plasma-calibrated” , common with most meters. The results you receive from your doctor are also from the plasma. This makes it easier for patients and caregivers to compare meter results with laboratory tests. The meter measures the current, calculates your blood glucose level, displays the result, and stores it in memory.
Test results with the OneTouch Blood Glucose Monitoring System are presented in milligrams per deciliter . Normal ranges for blood glucose in an adult is 80 to 120 mg/dL before a meal and less than 180 mg/dL after a meal. After your glucose result appears, the meter will also display a Range Indicator Arrow below your glucose result to indicate if your result is below, above or within your range limits. If your readings are high or low, this may require immediate treatment according to your healthcare professional’s recommendations.
