Tips For Success From The Rd
Are you looking for ways to change your lifestyle that will positively impact your type 2 diabetes diagnosis? Here are some of my tips for success.
Weight control is extremely important when you have type 2 diabetes. Dropping a number of pounds to bring you back to a healthy weight level cant cure you of diabetes, but it can help you better manage your glucose levels. You can also reverse many of the side effects that youve experienced from your condition. Consider a healthier diet that is approved for type 2 diabetes, combining it with a regular exercise regimen.
A plant-based diet is extremely beneficial for people who have type 2 diabetes. Fruits and veggies dont result in as dramatic of a glucose spike as a lot of other processed foods do. Work more salads, smoothies and vegetable-based soups into your diet.
Add more fiber to your diet to slow down the absorption of sugars into the bloodstream. This keeps your blood sugar levels more controlled.
Managing Type 2 Diabetes
Keeping your blood sugar well controlled is key to reducing your risk of long-term complications such as heart, kidney or eye problems.
Regardless of whether you need medication or which medication you are taking, diet and lifestyle play a key part in preventing long-term complications. You can find out more about how you can improve your diabetes control with diet from our separate leaflet called Type 2 Diabetes Diet.
The initial stages in type 2 diabetes treatment are usually to follow a healthy diet, lose weight if you are overweight, and do regular physical activity. If lifestyle advice does not control your blood glucose levels then medicines are used to help lower these levels. One medicine is used first but two or even three medicines may be needed.
In addition to controlling your blood glucose, keeping raised blood pressure, cholesterol and other risk factors under control are also important. You can read more about controlling other risk factors in our separate leaflet called Type 2 Diabetes.
The rest of this leaflet is about medications to control blood glucose.
New Report Explains Microbiome Impact On Glucose Controlhighlights How Probiotic Interventions Can Improve Type 2 Diabetes Management
A new study by Pendulum Therapeutics was presented at the American Diabetes Associations 81st Scientific Sessions. Its findings show Pendulum Glucose Control increases circulating butyrate and ursodeoxycholic acid , a secondary bile acid in people with type 2 diabetes, and supports the mechanism for improvement in glucose control.
This study, part of an ongoing series, is adding to the body of knowledge on the microbiome and its role in metabolic disease including type 2 diabetes, says Society member Orville Kolterman, MD, chief medical officer at Pendulum Therapeutics and principal investigator of the study. This data builds upon the research Pendulum Therapeutics presented at ADAs 79th Scientific Sessions two years ago. Our initial presentation showcased the efficacy of Pendulums proprietary microbiome symbiotic formulation and its ability to improve glucose control in patients with Type 2 Diabetes. This newest data will further inform the development of a portfolio of products that target the microbiome as a pathway to augment the dietary management of impaired glucose metabolism and other metabolic diseases.

What Is Pendulum Glucose Control
Pendulum Glucose Control was the first product to be released by Pendulum Therapeutics. There are other medical probiotics that you will find on the health and wellness market, but Glucose Control is one of the best. It includes five powerful probiotic strains along with one prebiotic . This blend is designed to support people suffering from type 2 diabetes. It will manage their A1C and blood sugar levels more effectively to improve quality of life and reduce the risk of side effects.
Behind the Brand
Pendulum Therapeutics is a microbiome-focused company that utilizes DNA sequencing to develop impressive therapies a number of conditions. They are the first of their kind, offering evidence-based glucose control products. Their medical-grade probiotics can be beneficial in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is believed that type 2 diabetes may have a connection to an imbalance in the gut microbiome. Creating a more diverse environment could help people better manage their symptoms by aid in fiber digestion and the production of butyrate .
Pendulum Therapeutics Raises $54 Million
The Series C round nearly doubled the entirety of Pendulums previous raises, bringing the total venture capital raised to $111 million.
As lead investor, Meritech General Partner Craig Sherman will take a seat on the Pendulum Board of Directors alongside Roelof Botha, a partner at Sequoia, and Adam DAugelli, a partner at True Ventures.
We think Pendulum is a next generation pharma company doing next generation gene sequencing, said Sherman. Pendulum could be another 10x Genomics, Datadog, Snowflake or Roblox, which are Meritech investments that went public in the last two years. Pendulum feels like it could be that, because they are creating something that’s truly differentiated and could truly change a person’s life.
Craig, Roelof and I are excited about Pendulum because they are using the microbiome in an entirely new way, to create a never-before-seen product, said DAugelli. Theres a huge white space here. With many supplements, theres no way to tell if theyre even working, while medicines are synthetic and can have side effects. At Pendulum, ingredients are sourced from the microbiome that naturally lives within our bodies, and their formulas are rigorously tested for safety and effectiveness. This new hybrid product Pendulum has created is safe, requires less capital than a drug to bring to market, and could be incredibly beneficial for millions of people.

Precautions If You Are Unwell
Some medications commonly prescribed to people with diabetes can cause complications if you are otherwise unwell, particularly if you are dehydrated. These include:
- SGLT-2 inhibitors.
- ARBs, which may be used as an alternative to ACE inhibitors.
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs, used for pain.
If you are taking any of these medicines and become unwell, particularly with diarrhoea and/or vomiting, contact your doctor or nurse. They may recommend that you stop taking some of your medication temporarily. Our leaflet on diabetes and illness gives more advice on what you should do if you are unwell.
How Do I Prevent High Blood Sugars
In order to keep your blood sugar levels in a healthy range you need to follow your meal plan, exercise program, and medicine schedule. It is important that you:
- Understand the effect of nutrition, different types of food and how they influence on your personal blood sugar levels
- Check the influence of type and intensity of exercise on your sugar levels
- Stay aware of your blood sugar levels by consistently monitoring with Dario, especially in exceptional situations such as sick days, change in dietary habits or physical activity, drug therapy or stress situations 3,4

Foundations Of Blood Glucose Control
The goal of managing type 2 diabetes is to keep your blood sugar levels in a healthy range. To achieve this, you should make lifestyle changes, including losing weight if you’re overweight, eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise. If you smoke, you should also get help to quit smoking. You may also need to take medications, such as pills, insulin or other injectable medications. Your health care provider will create a plan tailored to you to help you reach your goals.
Sulfonylurea Medicines As Type 2 Diabetes Treatments
There are several types of sulfonylurea medicines. These include:
They work by increasing the amount of insulin that your pancreas makes.
If you are prescribed a sulfonylurea, usually a low dose is started. The dose can be increased if necessary every few weeks until there is good control of the blood glucose level. You can take a sulfonylurea in addition to other glucose-lowering tablets if one tablet does not control blood glucose well enough on its own.
Possible problems with sulfonylureasSulfonylurea medicines used to be widely prescribed for people whose blood sugar was still too high when they were taking metformin. However, sulfonylureas have several problems not shared by other medications. For this reason, they are no longer recommended as the standard choice after metformin.
Common or important side-effects of sulfonylureas include:
- Low blood sugar . This can lead to weakness, blurred vision, confusion, poor co-ordination and collapse. In very severe cases, it can be fatal. Please read the separate leaflet called Hypoglycaemia for more details.
- Feeling sick, mild diarrhoea and constipation.
See the leaflet that comes in the medicine packet for full details of cautions and possible side-effects.

How Do I Treat High Blood Sugar
Treating high blood sugar generally depends on what has caused it. If you have regular occurrences, you should consult with your health care team to review your medicines and/or lifestyle.
You may be advised to:
- change your diet
- drink plenty of sugar-free fluids
- do gentle, regular exercise
- if you use insulin, you may be advised to adjust your dose
If your blood sugar levels are over 250-300 mg/dL, you should check your urine for ketones. Ketones appear in your urine when your body is breaking down fats for energy, and for people with diabetes, this is an indication that the management of your diabetes needs adjusting. Ketones are more common in someone with type 1 diabetes. They may be present if you have an illness, are dehydrated or have lost weight. Ketones may also appear in someone with type 2 diabetes in the case of illness.
If you have ketones in your urine you should:
- Correct your dose of insulin and recheck your blood glucose in 1-2 hours.
- Keep drinking water and rest do not exercise as this can increase the amount of ketones
- See your health care team to review your treatment plan
- If you have the following symptoms you should call your doctor as soon as possible:
- Your blood sugar levels are not going down
- Your breath smells fruity
- Acetone in your urine is an extreme condition and you should go directly to the emergency room for treatment.3,4
Monitor Blood Sugar Regularly
You can determine daily blood sugar patterns by testing your blood sugar levels regularly throughout the day. This can help you identify the circumstances when your blood sugar levels are at their highest.
Identifying these patterns can help you plan your daily activities and meals to keep your blood sugar levels.
